Referrals to MPHP

Who should be referred?

The MPHP helps professionals who are challenged by substance misuse, mental health issues, burnout, behavioral disorders, or who may be experiencing legal issues related to any of the above.  The MPHP advocates for colleagues whose health challenges may compromise their professional and personal lives.  The MPHP is able to serve healthcare professionals licensed by the following Maine Licensing Boards: Dental, Medical, Nursing, Osteopathic, Pharmacy, and Veterinary - and residents/students of these fields.

Anyone with a concern should call for a confidential consultation.
Whether the concern is for yourself, a loved one, a co-worker, or an employee, do not wait until there is a problem that may threaten the professional's career, license, or their life. The call to the MPHP is confidential* and free.  Staff will help you understand the role that MPHP plays in helping professionals and, if appropriate, will provide you with important resources and/or evaluation and treatment information.

Participants may enter into the program in any of the following ways:
  • Self Referral:  An individual who contacts the MPHP themselves without being required to do so by an employer or Licensing Board is considered to be a voluntary participant.
  • 3rd Party Referral: An individual is referred to MPHP by a concerned 3rd party. The referral source will be notified once initial contact is made with the prospective participant. After this initial contact, no additional information is shared with the referral source unless proper releases are obtained from the participant. Third-party referrals may include family, friends, colleagues, employers, legal counsel, or any other interested source. A participant referred by a 3rd party is still considered a voluntary participant.
  • Board Referral: Individual Licensing Boards refer individuals to MPHP, sometimes as a result of the licensure application process and sometimes as a result of Board action. A participant referred by the board and who has a Board Consent Agreement is considered to be a mandated participant.
