About the Medical Professionals Health Program

Office Hours: Monday thru Friday 8AM to 4PM.
*Please leave a message after hours and staff will return your call during the next business day.

Program Objective:
Our goal is to assist healthcare professionals by providing confidential and compassionate monitoring, assistance and advocacy. Our professional staff will provide intake assessments, clinical coordination, explain the evaluation and treatment options and, if appropriate, monitoring services.

Who should be referred?
The MPHP helps professionals who suffer from substance use illnesses, mental illness, behavioral disorders, or who are experiencing legal issues related to any of the above.  The Program and Advisory Committee are advocates for colleagues whose health problems may compromise their professional and personal lives.  The MPHP is able to serve healthcare professionals licensed by the following Maine boards: Dental, Medical, Nursing, Osteopathic, Pharmacy, and Veterinary- or residents and students in any of these fields.

Confidentiality:
Information shared with the program concerning a healthcare professional seeking or receiving assistance is confidential. As the MPHP program is operated in an ethical manner, confidentiality is limited only by overreaching responsibility for public safety - issues that could foreseeably result in patient harm must be reported under protocols negotiated with the licensing boards.
  • This is a proactive program. Participating professionals are treated with compassion and understanding and are encouraged to take the steps necessary to maintain personal health and professional integrity.
  • While the MPHP seeks to maintain confidentiality for all voluntary participants, certain state regulations may require limited reporting - such reporting will be disclosed to the participant beforehand. There may be circumstances where reporting is necessary when public safety is a concern.
  • Participants may be asked to cease working in their profession until they are well enough to return to practice safely.
  • This program is in compliance with all applicable state laws and regulations.

“I am a Nurse, and I am an Alcoholic. I have come now to embrace my disease. For the last few years I have kept this BIG secret. I felt ashamed and embarrassed. I thought for a long time I was “hiding” my illness, but this past summer my disease took away my relationships, my self-esteem, self-respect, and almost my career. When I hit my “rock” bottom and sought out treatment I thought everyone would judge me. I was convinced I would be discredited as a nurse, and surely would need a new career when all was said and done. That couldn’t have been further from the truth. As I reflect back on this marvelous journey, it has become apparent to me how lucky I am.”
