Confidentiality

Information shared with the program concerning a healthcare professional seeking or receiving assistance is confidential. As the MPHP program operates in an ethical manner, confidentiality is limited only by overreaching responsibility for public safety - issues that could foreseeably result in patient harm must be reported under protocols negotiated with Maine's Licensing Boards.

  • Participating professionals are treated with compassion and understanding and are encouraged to take the steps necessary to maintain personal health and professional integrity.
  • While the MPHP seeks to maintain confidentiality for all voluntary participants, certain state regulations may require limited reporting - such reporting will be disclosed to the participant beforehand. There may be circumstances where reporting is necessary when public safety is a concern.
  • Participants may be asked to cease working in their profession until they are well enough to safely return to practice.
  • This program is in compliance with all applicable state laws and regulations.

“I am a Nurse, and I am an Alcoholic. I have come now to embrace my disease. For the last few years I have kept this BIG secret. I felt ashamed and embarrassed. I thought for a long time I was “hiding” my illness, but this past summer my disease took away my relationships, my self-esteem, self-respect, and almost my career. When I hit my “rock” bottom and sought out treatment I thought everyone would judge me. I was convinced I would be discredited as a nurse, and surely would need a new career when all was said and done. That couldn’t have been further from the truth. As I reflect back on this marvelous journey, it has become apparent to me how lucky I am.”
