ABOUT THE MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS HEALTH PROGRAM
The Medical Professions Health Program (MPHP) assists professions who suffer from mental health/behavioral, substance use/abuse issues. We assist with individuals who are experience issue with their health that have potential to impact/compromise their personal lives and the lives of their patients. We do not provide a diagnosis or treatment.
Statistics show that in any given group of people, 10% to 15% will have an alcohol or drug addiction. The numbers are higher for those who suffer from mental illness, at more then 20% rate in the general population. These numbers hold true within the medical profession, as such illnesses preclude people due to profession or socioeconomic status.
MPHP’s goal is to help participants get the assistance they need so they can remain employed and practicing in their chosen profession. The MPHP works cooperatively with six Maine boards of licensure, hospitals, medical staffs, and professional associations to ensure that professionals in need of treatment and services find the resources they need; better understand the treatment and recovery process; and implement strategies for return to safe practice.
The Medical Professionals Health Program, a program of the Maine Medical Association, assists medical professionals of Maine by providing confidential and compassionate assistance and advocacy. MPHP professionals and committee members help participants with diagnosed substance use disorders. Although we do not provide evaluation or treatment, we help participants better understand the treatment and recovery process and help implement strategies for return to safe practice.
