ABOUT THE MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS HEALTH PROGRAM

The Medical Professionals Health Program (MPHP) assists professionals who suffer from mental health/behavioral issues, substance misuse, and stress and burnout in the workplace. In order to assist those who are experiencing issues with their health and licensure, and any other issues that have the potential to impact/compromise their personal lives and the lives of their patients - the MPHP provides monitoring, advocacy, resources, referrals for treatment, education and outreach services. We do not provide comprehensive evaluation or treatment, but we do make evaluator and treatment recommendations/resources, and provide advocacy in communications to employers and Maine's licensing agencies.

Why Monitor

Data shows that anywhere from 5 to 15% of providers will develop a substance use disorder while in practice, and 35% of that workforce will suffer from a substantial mental health issue and/or burnout.

Approximately 1/3 of professionals will have a condition that could impact their ability to practice with reasonable skill and safety. Prevalent stress and burnout brought on by working in the healthcare field heavily contributes to this.

Programs like MPHP provide a safe, non-disciplinary alternative for providers to obtain assistance, guidance and support in a confidential, professional and respectful manner during their time of need.
MPHP seeks to enhance early detection of potentially impairing illness, with documented long-term maintenance of wellness with proven successful outcomes. Providers who have successfully completed monitoring with programs like MPHP have been shown to experience a lower risk of patient harm after monitoring. - FSPHP

The MPHP helps program participants get the assistance they need so they can remain licensed and practicing in their chosen professions. The MPHP works collaboratively with six Maine boards of licensure, hospitals, medical staffs, and associations to ensure that professionals in need of treatment and services find the resources they need.
In addition, we assist throughout the treatment and recovery process, and implement strategies to ensure safe practice in Maine.

               WHY MPHP?
"The program's continued support gave me the encouragement to do what I once thought impossible. The MPHP walked on this path with me to a point where I now have gained far more in my life than I ever lost. Today I live a life of recovery that is based on gratitude for my many blessings, but also for the lessons learned during my struggles with addiction. I am privileged to lead a life more abundant than ever before and I fully believe that I am a better health care provider because of what I have learned. And, for all who took the risk to believe in me again, I will be forever grateful."                                                                                                                                                                       ~Anonymous MPHP Participant~
