The MPHP is inviting all health care providers to join us for a comprehensive 1-day wellness conference designed to help professionals, employers, treatment providers and colleagues better understand the factors affecting recovering professionals and provide strategies for creating healthier working experiences for all medical professionals. Substance use illnesses, mental health illness, stress and depression are having a major impact on heath practitioners’ safety, focus, decision-making and job satisfaction. This conference will provide valuable continuing education for health care providers, whether treating patients in recovery, looking to enhance your own recovery efforts, or seeking to better understand colleagues struggling with addiction and mental health illnesses.
Who should attend?

Sessions and Speakers
Michael Kaufmann, BSc, MD, CCFP, FCFP, dip. ABAM, Ontario Medical Society
Civility: New Approaches to Behavioral Health for Medical Professionals
In 1995 Dr. Kaufmann became the founding Director of the Physician and Professionals Health Program (PHP) of the Ontario Medical Association. He is the Chairman of the Canadian Physician Health Institute Advisory Committee and a past chairperson of the Physician Health Committee of the Canadian Society of Addiction Medicine and the Canadian Physician Health Network, a national affiliation of physician support programs. He is also a faculty member of the Physician Manager Institute of the Canadian Medical Association. Dr. Kaufmann is the Medical Director of the Physician Workplace Support Program, a new service of the PHP designed to assist doctors and their workplaces when professional behaviour is a concern.
Elissa Chesler, PhD, Jackson Laboratories
Genetic and Genomic Research in Addiction
Dr. Chesler studies the genetic and genomic basis for complex addiction, depression and /or anxiety disorders in model organisms. “The DSM (the manual that defines psychiatric diseases and mental health disorders for diagnoses) uses observed behaviors but doesn’t account for the underlying biological causes,” says Chesler. “We need a better, more precise way to define complex behaviors and develop coherent categories for them based on the underlying biology.”
