ABOUT THE MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS HEALTH PROGRAM
The Medical Professionals Health Program (MPHP) is a nationally recognized assistance program dedicated to helping health care professionals enter a safe, healthy recovery program. The MPHP has served over 700 healthcare professionals since it was first established by the Maine Medical Association in 1987. Our trained staff helps identify, assist, support, and monitor any Maine-licensed medical professional with a potential impairment due to a substance use illness or mental illness.
Statistics show that in any given group of people, 8% to 10% will have an alcohol or drug addiction and addiction touches every person, whether it’s personal, a family member, friend, co-worker, or health care provider. If you or someone you know has a substance use illness or mental health problem, the (MPHP) can help.
MPHP’s goal is to help participants get the assistance they need so they can remain employed and practicing in their chosen profession. The MPHP works cooperatively with six Maine boards of licensure, hospitals, medical staffs, and professional associations to ensure that professionals in need of treatment and services find the resources they need; better understand the treatment and recovery process; and implement strategies for return to safe practice.
The Medical Professionals Health Program, a program of the Maine Medical Association, assists medical professionals of Maine by providing confidential and compassionate assistance and advocacy. MPHP professionals and committee members help participants with diagnosed substance use disorders. Although we do not provide evaluation or treatment, we help participants better understand the treatment and recovery process and help implement strategies for return to safe practice.
